Empowering Creators: Implementing Comment Control in FotazaApp
In social media applications, the ability to control interaction is just as important as the ability to share content. For the FotazaApp project, we recently addressed a common request: giving the original author the autonomy to disable comments on their posts.
The Need for Interaction Governance
Community engagement is a powerful tool, but creators often face scenarios where they need to curtail comments—whether to manage heated discussions or simply to keep a post focused on the visual content itself. Previously, posts were open for discussion by default with no way to toggle this state.
Implementation Strategy
To achieve this, we introduced a status flag on the post model. By adding a simple boolean check, we can intercept the comment submission logic to verify if the author has permitted further discussion.
// Check if commenting is enabled before saving
const handleNewComment = async (post, commentData) => {
if (!post.isCommentingEnabled) {
throw new Error('Comments are currently disabled for this post.');
}
return await db.comments.create({
postId: post.id,
content: commentData.text
});
};
This implementation ensures that the business logic remains thin. By performing the check at the controller or service layer before reaching the database, we prevent unauthorized writes while providing clear feedback to the user.
The Outcome
By adding this flag, we shifted from a "one-size-fits-all" engagement model to a creator-first approach. Authors now have the flexibility to toggle their post settings, resulting in a safer and more curated environment for the FotazaApp community. This small change acts as a safeguard, ensuring that the creator remains in control of the conversation surrounding their work.
